Meeting the Acosta family

Nilsa is a single mom who works as a cashier in a grocery store. She and her 12 year old son, Lucio, have been living with her mom in a very small house. Recently Nilsa was selected by Habitat for Humanity Paraguay to receive a house that will be built adjacent to her mom’s.

This is where the team from Canada comes in (of which I am a part). Over the next few days we will begin constructing a home (it will take until early April for it to be completed – long after we’re gone). Today we started digging the foundation which was a very hot task in the humid 36C weather. The sun was beating down and sapping us of our energy but we persevered to complete the dig. Tomorrow we will finish laying to foundational stone and begin preparing the forms for the cement.
