Postcards from Vancouver Island, Sept. 2019

On my recent trip to British Columbia during which I hiked the West Coast Trail (see previous post), I got to spend time exploring Vancouver Island. My trip started with a visit to Victoria and the surrounding area. Here are some photos.

Butchart Gardens is a spectacular park about 45 min from the city.

After Victoria I headed north to Nanaimo and onward to Gold River.

On my way from Nanaimo to Gold River I took a detour to see Cathedral Grove, an incredible old growth forest of Douglas Fir and Cedar. Trees here are 800 years old or more.

I visited my nephew who is working at Moutcha Bay resort, two hours west of Campbell River near Gold River. The resort is remote and beautiful.

My last day I visited the BC Museum, known around the world for its collection of totem poles.

The museum had an exhibit on the Mayans.
