While most of my fellow Canadians have been whining incessantly about the intensity of this winter, I’ve been revelling in it. Truth is, it’s my second favourite season after summer. And, given the chance, I don’t think I’d trade away the experience of a good bracing winter for the opportunity to live in a warmer climate. Part of it is my stubborn nature, but mostly it’s the esthetic of the season. There’s nothing I love more than the midnight blue hues of twilight in a clear winter sky. Or a bitterly cold and clear day in February when the warm sun on your face reminds you that ultimately even a polar vortex is no match for intense sunshine.
A couple of weeks ago, I jumped at the opportunity to visit two cities that really embrace the winter experience – Montreal and Quebec City. In party-town Montreal, the big festival is Igloofest, which is basically a big outdoor dance party over several weekends in January and February. Quebec City, meanwhile, plays host to the long-running Carnaval. Here are a few photos from the weekend!
